Hearts is a classic trick-taking card game that involves strategic play and careful decision-making. Designed for four players, this multiplayer game operates without partnerships, emphasizing individual performance.

The objective of Hearts is to avoid accruing points, which are scored for winning tricks containing specific cards. Each heart card accounts for one penalty point, while the queen of spades carries a hefty value of 13 points. Other cards do not contribute to the score, and there is no trump suit to complicate matters.

A unique feature of the game is the "shooting the moon" option. If a player manages to capture all scoring cards, they can either deduct 26 points from their own score or add 26 points to their opponents'. The strategic depth in attempting to break hearts—by being the first to play a heart card—adds an exciting layer of tension, but it requires careful planning to avoid unwelcome points unless one is prepared to attempt shooting the moon.

The game concludes with the player holding the lowest score being declared the winner.

Hearts has garnered a variety of names across different cultures; for instance, it is referred to as "Copas" in Portugal, "Dame de Pique" in France, and "Rickety Kate" in Australia. Its global appeal speaks to its engaging gameplay.
